Mi Familia en Acción Texas on Chevron Doctrine being Overturned
Statement
July 12, 2024
Last month, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the 40-year-old Chevron doctrine, which has required courts to defer to a federal agency’s reasonable interpretation of ambiguous laws on a range of issues and industries, from worker’s rights, drug and food safety, consumer protections, industrial pollution, and technology.
The Supreme Court then blocked the Environmental Protection Agency’s “Good Neighbor” portion of the Clean Air Act, which would have reduced air pollution from 23 states that crossed state lines, thereby jeopardizing safe and clean air and water.
Mi Familia en Acción released the following statement on the SCOTUS rulings:
"By overturning the Chevron Doctrine and blocking the EPA’s ‘Good Neighbor’ plan, the Supreme Court has threatened regulations that protect Texans and all Americans from unmitigated pollution, unsafe food and medicine, consumer fraud, wage theft, workplace abuse, and more. Giving judges who are not scientific experts the ability to rule on a reasonable interpretation of ambiguous laws and block efforts to keep air and water clean and safe among states is a heavy blow for us all. We will not be defeated by the greedy few who rig the rules to make profit and damage our environment. We will continue to organize and exercise our rights to protect our communities and hold politicians and corporations accountable.”
