Washington D.C. – The Supreme Court on Thursday struck down affirmative action in college admissions, declaring race cannot be a factor and forcing higher education institutions to look for new ways to achieve diverse student bodies. Héctor Sánchez Barba, President and CEO of Mi Familia Vota, released the following statement in response:

Today’s Supreme Court decision does not reflect what we know is best for our country. Whether you are black, Latino, Asian American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, Indigenous, or White, we all deserve a fair shot at higher education.

Mi Familia Vota will continue to work to protect the ability of students of color to tell their stories without excluding who they are. For nearly half a century, our nation believed every student deserved the opportunity to pursue higher education regardless of race.

Together, we will fight relentlessly until every student has the equal opportunity to access higher education and pursue their dreams. Our country thrives when we benefit from the talents and potential of students from all backgrounds and build respect for everyone.

This is not the first time extremists on the Supreme Court have ruled against the majority of people in our country.  We are at our best when we bring down barriers to ensure all of us can get ahead, no matter what we look or where we come from.

This is why elections matter; we will not let the Supreme Court’s decisions curtail our freedom to reach our highest potential.
