Texans look out for each other through storms over and over again. Meanwhile, rather than help families recover from flooding or prepare for the next disaster, the Texas Governor Greg Abbott is sacrificing our freedoms and futures in exchange for power and President Trump’s political agenda. The Governor is rigging our voting maps to give the President more congressional seats to stay in power and silence voters. By picking their voters in these rigged maps, neither the Governor nor the President have to listen to concerns or criticism over how our taxpayer money is spent. Texans from across the state have joined together at the Capitol, in committee hearings, in the streets, and online to demand that Texans’ needs, like flood relief, be put first. Still the Governor made redistricting the priority for both special sessions.
Redistricting 101
Communities are always changing or growing; knowing how and where they are changing is key to planning for our futures. Redistricting is the process of updating voting maps to make the principle of fair representation and freedom possible in our country. It happens every 10 years after the population is counted through the Census; the next one being in 2030. Each congressional district must have an equal number of people to make sure that each vote within a district is equal to others. This data is also key in shaping our futures by determining how our taxpayer money is reinvested into education, healthcare, infrastructure, the workforce, and small businesses to name a few areas that help communities thrive.
What is happening in Texas is a test for everyone’s freedoms and futures. The freedoms we have today to speak out and criticise the powerful with our vote and our voices are under attack. The brave leaders in our past who fought for our freedoms are looking back at us; Our children and the future of our families are counting on us.
